A potentiometer, often referred to as a pot, is an electrical component used for measuring or controlling electrical potential difference (voltage) in a circuit.

It consists of a resistive element, typically a long, thin wire or track made of a material with a high resistivity, and a movable contact called a wiper. The resistive element is usually arranged in a straight line or circular shape.

By connecting the potentiometer in a circuit, the wiper can be adjusted along the resistive element, changing the effective length of the resistive path. This movement varies the resistance between the wiper and the two ends of the resistive element, allowing for precise control of voltage or the measurement of unknown voltages.

Potentiometers find wide applications in electronics, such as audio systems for volume control, variable voltage regulators, and sensor circuits. They are also used in experimental setups, calibration, and as a voltage reference in electrical measurements.
